30 Oct 2010.

Wow what a wonderful day we had on our Fit for Praise Music Day! Around forty people from the Culm Valley Mission Community, and other local churches came together for a truly uplifting day. Here is what some of them said:

" I really enjoyed it"
"I think God will be really pleased"
"I tried something new"
"I found it really useful to put music in worship in a wider context of worship as service to God"

The day began with some inspiring and thought provoking teaching on the role of music in gathered worship by Andrew Maries. We then spent the morning learning a variety of songs in various styles looking at how these can be used to help us in our worship together from gathering, praising, saying sorry, praying, times of pain, times of communion and going out from a time spent in worship together.

Colossians 3 12-17

As God’s chosen ones, holy and beloved, clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, meekness and patience. Bear with one another and, if anyone has a complaint against another, forgive each other; just as the Lord has forgiven you, so you also must forgive. Above all, clothe yourselves with love, which binds everything together in perfect harmony. And let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, to which indeed you were called in the one body. And be thankful. Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly; teach and admonish one another in all wisdom; and with gratitude in your hearts sing psalms, hymns and spiritual songs to God. And whatever you do, in word or deed, do everything in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him.

Lunch provided a great time to get to know each other and make new acquaintances across our community. During the afternoon we split into workshops giving an opportunity to develop skills and for many to try something new. There were workshop groups for instruments, voices, percussion and songwriting. Everyone had the chance to try two workshops before bringing our new experiences together in a closing act of worship. It was great to welcome a good number of additional people who came to participate in the closing worship, to hear what we had been up to and to join us in singing some of the new music we’d learnt.

Particular thanks are due to Mike Frye, Andrew Maries and Tim Boxer for all their input during the day from introducing songs to us, to so ably leading us in the workshops, allowing us to develop and try new things. Also a big thank you to everyone who helped make the day run so smoothly.

Selina Garner summed up the day sharing with us how she had experienced God in what had happened over the day through us all coming together from across our community, different churches and age ranges, to share and learn and offer our talents and creative gifts. I hope that something of God’s kingdom that was present on the day will ripple out into the worship in our churches as we continue to follow God’s call in our lives.

If you have any feedback from the day or thoughts about where God might be leading us, please do contact either Selina or myself.
