Today St Mary's Church has been awarded a grant of £39,300 to support it's growing ministry and mission in the area. The award was given as part of the Million for Mission initiative from the Diocese of Exeter.

The vicar of St Mary's is Revd Selina Garner. "The three-year funding is to help us as a local church develop Square Corner as a community café in Uffculme. The money will enable us to appoint a coordinator to help support local volunteers wanting to serve others and make Square Corner an accessible and welcoming place where people can come to enjoy a coffee, share their story, get practical help and support  and for those interested find opportunities to find out more about the Christian faith."

The money will help us to develop our coffee mornings and to install wifi and a phone in the building. We also want to open the café after school and we have already set up a training centre based here in Square Corner for two trainee youthworkers – Vicki and Peter who have already begun to support more youth friendly events here!

We hope the person appointed will help local volunteers to run various special events such as Cream teas, courses to explore the Christian faith like alpha courses, courses to support local people in developing their skills in parenting, marriage, dealing with stress, using facebook and other practical courses and events to serve people. We also want our coordinator to continue to support local villagers in raising money for all sorts of charities and most Saturdays there is an event here to raise money for charities locally and overseas.

We pray we will put this amazing grant to good use over the next three years and it will mark a new chapter in the life of the local church as we try to be part of Gods plan to bring healing and wholeness to people in our local community and support them as they try to make a difference in the world. We want to be known for our generosity and hospitality and love and so reflect in some small way the character of the God we serve.

This is part of a really big dream to renovate the building to support this new post and the new programmes and volunteers we hope to encourage -  we need to create some office space, install central heating and give the front a bit of a face lift and we will be fundraising for this in the coming year - but this grant is an amazing encouragement that God is leading us somewhere new and wants us to get on with living out the Christian faith with what He has given us.
