Children's work

At St Mary’s, we believe that our children are the Church of Today.

Sunday morning Explorers

At St Mary's we recognise that children are a very important part of our church community.  We want to offer children a vibrant, happy environment and so on Sunday mornings, during our 11am service, our Explorers group provides a range of activities for them. We either escape to Square Corner (close the church) for Bible story, games, songs  and craft, or we have a craft table with activities the main service. Parents are welcome to join in!

Explorers is aimed at those aged 5-11 years but younger children are welcome if accompanied by an adult.

Our aim is to provide children with an opportunity to explore the Christian faith for themselves in a creative and age-appropriate way, as well as to build friendships and have fun!  We base our teaching on Roots material ( and our Children's Ministry team take it in turns to led and support the sessions.

For our youngest visitors we have toys and books available in both the Church and Square Corner, where there are also toilets and baby changing facilities. Babies and toddlers are welcome!

We always rejoin the rest of the congregation after our session, in time for squash and biscuits at the end!

Explorers Café on Sunday Afternoon

On the fourth Sunday of each month The Square Corner transforms into Explorers Cafe; we meet at 4pm until 5.30pm for this event which is aimed primarily at children aged 5 to 11 years, with all family members welcome.  Explorers Cafe provides a relaxed  environment for children and their families to learn about the Christian faith together.

We begin by enjoying drinks and cakes provided by the any talented bakers in our church, then there is an option to enjoy a Bible story, games and craft, or to stay in the cafe area and read or chat.  We choose a different story from the Bible each months for Explorers Cafe and our craft is themed around this, with an opportunity for everyone to ask questions and  take home their works of art!

Special Events

Throughout the year we run special events in church and The Square Corner for children.  bring your duvet and curl up with popcorn for one of our film nights, roll up your sleeves and get stuck into some Easter Crafts, or come dressed as your favourite character from the Christmas Story to our renowned Scratch Nativity!  We post details of these events on our website, via church email news and on posters in the village.  Contact: Sarah Rock-Evans (

Story Clubs

Sarah currently runs Story Clubs at both Uffculme Primary School and Kingwood Childcare once a week.  These are short sessions for Key Stage 1 and preschool pupils; a Bible story, game and song or quiz help children learn the basics of the Christian faith in a fun environment.     We are grateful for the opportunity to work with both Uffculme Primary School and Kingwood Childcare.
